St Andrew’s School – allegation against Mr May

Below is a contemporaneous newspaper report of the school board meeting in 1898 about allegations of cruelty directed at schoolmaster May by John Tucker. It appears that this originally arose from an underlying dispute about the provision of books i.e. whether they should have been free or provided at a cost to pupils. It is interesting in its illumination of the conduct of business and varying attitudes of the times, and also in giving life to some of the names we see among the businessmen in the town.

The report was saved by Julia Dupuis in her ‘diary’.

Mrs Dupuis was clearly very upset about this as can be seen from her diary entry on the main page.
